daddy shirts

this was the last shirt i saw him in. the last photo of us together. fall 2007. annoyed as i was about my mother taking photos at the airport, i am thankful now. 

he loved hawaiian shirts. he probably had hundreds of them. i think they felt good on his big body and that he liked the spirit of them. they were the opposite of the suits he wore when going to work. he loved jigsaw puzzles too. there was always one going on the table. sometimes he’d fall asleep there. i think they calmed his mind maybe like they do mine. 

in the winter of 2020, i made a selection of my father’s shirts into puzzles. i’ve been doing them over and over again. falling asleep at the table just like he did.
